The museum offers visitors a chronological journey through 7,000 years of Egyptian civilization, from prehistoric times to the Greco-Roman period.
The 120-acre site of the long-delayed but highly-anticipated £1 billion Japanese-funded museum – the largest archaeological museum in the world with 872000 square-feet of floorspace.It will be home to 100000 artefacts, including 5398 items from the legendary Tutankhamun collection. The GEM represents a new era in Egypt's presentation of its archaeological treasures, replacing the crowded conditions of the centennial Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square. With the support of international organizations such as UNESCO and ICOM, the museum uses state-of-the-art technology to conserve, exhibit, and interpret artifacts that span the entire history of ancient Egyptian civilization.
Inside the luxuriously vast lobby the 3200-year-old statue of Ramses II is in center position. At 11 metres, it’s so tall that it had to be installed when the site was still a pile of sand, and the museum was then built around it.
