RECOMMENDED: The Bonn Challenge / 2011-2026

„Since 2011, the Challenge has witnessed extraordinary uptake to deliver on its goal to bring 150 million hectares of deforested and degraded land into restoration by 2020, and 350 million hectares by 2030.
In 2018, IUCN’s Bonn Challenge Barometer of progress found that from the 13 countries already reporting on area under restoration, 43.7 million hectares are under restoration transition.
The Barometer also indicates that the benefits accruing from these documented activities include an additional 354,000 jobs, an average investment per hectare of at least US$235 and almost 1.4 billion tonnes CO2e sequestered. The Barometer protocol has been applied in depth in five countries — Brazil, El Salvador, Mexico, Rwanda and the United States — who had made commitments totalling 30.7 million hectares, with 89% (27 million hectares) under restoration by 2018.”

„To meet these objectives, the Challenge draws on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the theory of Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR), which combines concern for ecological integrity with human wellbeing. Coined by IUCN and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), FLR has evolved into a proven nature-based solution with a track record of transforming lives and landscapes around the world.” - www.globallandscapesforum.org
„The Bonn Challenge is a global effort to restore 150 million hectares of the world's degraded and deforested lands by 2020 and 350 million hectares by 2030. It was hosted and launched by Germany and the International Union for Conservation of Nature in Bonn on 2 September 2011, in collaboration with the Global Partnership on Forest/Landscape Restoration and targets delivery on the Rio Conventions and other outcomes of the 1992 Earth Summit. As at 2013 over 20 million hectares of land had been pledged for restoration from countries including Brazil, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Rwanda, and the United States.” - Wikipédia
„The Bonn Challenge was launched by IUCN and the Government of Germany in 2011 to respond to the urgent issue of land degradation and deforestation. On 2 September 2020, the Bonn Challenge announced that 72 pledgors have committed to restore 210 million hectares of degraded and deforested land (almost 6x size of Germany).” - www.greenhouse.agency
