The camcorders were released in 1985 and 1987, respectively. One unit could hold enough tape for 40-120 minutes of VHS recording. VHS (Video Home System) is a discontinued standard for consumer-level analog video recording on tape cassettes, introduced in 1976 by JVC. In the early-to mid 1980s, camcorders were pretty expensive, they average cost was about $1500 which is about $4500 in today's money. When the JVC camera appeared in Back to the Future, it became even more popular.  A VHS as a hobbi in the 80s cost around $70-80 per tape. When VHS first hit the market, they didn't think people would want to purchase movies, so they priced them for video rental libraries at around $70-80 per tape.
Camcorder tapes can be played on VHS players that have a built-in VHS-C adapter. VHS-C is a smaller version of VHS tapes that were commonly used in camcorders.
To convert camcorder tapes to digital we connect a camcorder or playback deck to a professional-grade analog-to-digital converter (ADC), and capture the footage using video capture software on a computer.
