First rally: 1974 Tour de Corse              (Second woman in history to earn official factory driver status, after Pat Moss)

Michèle Mouton is the most successful woman ever to compete in the World Rally Championship. At the height of rallying’s fearsome Group B era, she won international rallies outright and placed second overall in the 1982 championship. Beyond WRC, she even smashed the Pikes Peak Hill Climb record and enjoyed success at Le Mans. Given this year marks 50 years since Mouton’s first rally in 1974, it’s an appropriate moment to revisit her incredible career highlights. - hagerty.co.uk (2024)

Female heroes in Motorsport PART 6 by Wolfgang Ihle

MICHELE MOUTON

The frenchwoman was probably the fastest female Racing driver of all time. What was particulary impressive with the Audi Quattro in the early 80s, when she got several victories in the Rally World Championship and narrowly lost the title to Walter Röhrl in 1982.

Mouton retired from active Racing in 1986, when the fast Group B cars were banned, but remained in Racing as an official for a long time. However, with her impressive driving style, the "black Vulcan" will be remembered forever.

The last rally of the 1986 Tour de Corse was fatal for Henri Toivonen and his co-driver, Sergio Cresto, when their Lancia Delta S4 crashed and exploded after leaving the road on Stage 18 on May 2, 1986. This deadly accident, occurring on the notoriously challenging tarmac roads of Corsica, along with another fatality at Rally Portugal earlier that season, led to the immediate ban of the powerful and dangerous Group B rally cars from the following season, thus ending the supercar era of the World Rally Championship (WRC).
